SCENE 01 / 04

A big campus. One confident guide.

Junho meets everyone at the main gate and shows them where to get a student ID, rest, and live. He promises to help his juniors. Lucas looks doubtful—so Junho demonstrates his taekwondo.

Junho showing Yuki and her friends around the university in the original Episode 15 artwork.

Yuki

준호 선배! 와, 한국 대학교는 정말 커요!

Junho! Wow, Korean universities are really big!

Junho

여기에서 학생증을 만들어요. 사진을 꼭 가져오세요.

This is where you get your student ID. Make sure you bring a photo.

Junho

그럼요! 태권도를 잘해요. 운동은 안 쉬어요. 얍!

Of course! I'm good at taekwondo. I don't take breaks from exercise. Yah!

SCENE 02 / 04

Classes, meals, and a noisy roommate.

Outside a classroom, Junho introduces his professor and talks about college life. Taking classes and eating with friends sounds fun. His friend’s snoring roommate is another story.

Amina asking Junho what college life is like.

Yuki

와, 한국 대학생들이에요! 모두 열심히 공부해요.

Wow, real Korean college students! They're all studying so hard.

Amina

선배, 대학교 생활은 어때요?

Junho, what's college life like?

Junho

재미있어요! 친구들하고 같은 수업을 들어요. 같이 밥을 먹어요. 같이 놀아요.

It's fun! I take the same classes as my friends. We eat together. We hang out together.

SCENE 03 / 04

Twenty students. A new word for “you.”

At the international student meetup, Junho calls everyone over with 너희. Amina asks what it means, and Yuki explains why it is not a polite way to address a teacher or an older student.

Junho welcoming Yuki and friends to the international student meetup.

Junho

여기는 국제 학생 모임이에요. 오늘은 스무 명이 왔어요.

This is the international student meetup. Twenty people came today.

Amina · quietly

유키 씨, '너희'는 무슨 말이에요?

Yuki, what does "neohui" mean?

Yuki · quietly

여러 사람을 부르는 말이에요. 선배나 선생님한테는 쓰지 마세요.

It addresses several people. Don't use neohui for older students or teachers.

SCENE 04 / 04

Lucas. Brazil. Done.

Everyone introduces their home country. Lucas finishes in three words; Théo could keep going for hours. They speak different languages, but share one goal: practising Korean together.

Lucas giving his three-word introduction while his friends laugh.

Amina

저는 아미나예요! 케냐에서 왔어요! 반가워요!

I'm Amina! I'm from Kenya! Nice to meet you!

Lucas

루카스. 브라질. 끝.

Lucas. Brazil. Done.

Yuki

우리는 언어가 달라요. 그런데 모두 같은 외국어를 배워요. 한국어요!

We all speak different languages. But we're all learning the same foreign language. Korean!

너희 is a familiar plural “you,” not a polite substitute for 여러분. In the final line, 우리나라 refers to the speaker’s own country; it does not always mean Korea.

FROM THE EPISODE SCRIPT · LEARNING REPLAY

A rest day. A notice to read. A name to write.

These three turns come from the revised script’s learning replay. The linked videos finish with six vocabulary cards; they do not contain this spoken replay. Use it here for reading and speaking practice. Junho taking a rest day here is a review scenario, separate from his boast in the story.

Junho

저는 매일 운동해요. 오늘은 운동을 안 해요. 쉬어요.

I exercise every day. I won't exercise today. I'm resting.

Yuki

저는 한국어를 공부해요. 아직 이 안내문은 읽지 못해요.

I study Korean. I still can't read this notice.

Amina

지금 음악은 듣지 않아요. 여기에서 이름을 써요.

I'm not listening to music now. I'll write my name here.

Some introductions are short. New friendships can last.

FROM THE STORY TO YOUR OWN WORDS

A small word changes the meaning.

Compare not doing something with being unable to do it.

01

Rest, read, and listen—negatively.

01FROM THE ORIGINAL DIALOGUE

운동은 안 쉬어요.

I don't take breaks from exercise.

Junho’s boast in scene 1. 안 negates 쉬어요. He says he keeps exercising; he is not saying that he is unable to rest.

Back to scene 01 ↗
02FROM THE SCRIPT’S LEARNING REPLAY

아직 이 안내문은 읽지 못해요.

I still can't read this notice.

From Yuki’s script replay. 읽지 못해요 describes inability. 아직 adds “still / not yet,” leaving room for progress.

03FROM THE SCRIPT’S LEARNING REPLAY

지금 음악은 듣지 않아요.

I'm not listening to music now.

From Amina’s script replay. The long form attaches -지 않아요 to 듣-, giving 듣지 않아요. It does not say she is unable to hear.

02

Not doing. Not being able to.

TODAY’S GRAMMAR

안 / 못

안 negates an action or a quality. 못 says that ability or circumstances prevent an action. Each has a short form and a longer form.

NEGATION · NOT안 + V/A → V/A-지 않아요

안 쉬어요 ↔ 쉬지 않아요

INABILITY · CANNOT못 + V → V-지 못해요

못 읽어요 ↔ 읽지 못해요

For the long form, remove 다 from the dictionary form and attach 지. Write a space before 않아요 or 못해요. 읽다 → 읽지 못해요.

With 운동하다 and 공부하다, put 안 or 못 before 해요: 운동 안 해요, 공부 못 해요. The explicit object form 운동을 안 해요 is also natural. Long form: 운동하지 않아요 or 운동을 하지 않아요.

안 is not always a choice: 안 커요 means “is not big.” In this beginner pattern, use 못 with action verbs for “cannot.” Noun negation uses 아니에요; the basic opposites of 있다 and 알다 are 없다 and 모르다.

Listen for 듣다: 안 들어요, but 듣지 않아요. The ㄷ changes to ㄹ before -어요, not before -지.

NEGATION · NOT

SHORT FORM · before the verb

FROM THE ORIGINAL DIALOGUE

운동은 안 쉬어요.

I don't take breaks from exercise.

Junho says he does not take breaks from exercise. This is negation, not inability.

Compare the two meeting examples to hear “do not” versus “cannot.” They are added practice sentences. The other examples come from the story or the script’s learning replay; each form is labelled. The moving icons are learning illustrations.
03

Check the form. Make it yours.

PRACTICE 01

You are taking a rest day. Complete the short form: “I am not exercising today.”오늘은 운동을 ___ 해요.

Choose an answer to see why.

PRACTICE 02

The notice is still too difficult to read. Complete the long form for “cannot.”아직 이 안내문은 읽지 ___.

Choose an answer to see why.

PRACTICE 03

Choose the long form of 안 들어요 (“am not listening”).지금 음악은 ___.

Choose an answer to see why.

0 of 3 correct.

What are you not doing today?

Choose one: 운동하다, 공부하다, 읽다, or 듣다. Write a sentence about something you do not do or cannot do. For example: 오늘은 운동을 안 해요. Then try the other form: 오늘은 운동을 하지 않아요. Both describe the same rest day.
