Activities, Habits & Skills

Today organizes twelve actions for talking about routines and ability. Several are familiar review words. First practice the positive polite form; the paired grammar lesson will explain “do not” and “cannot.”

Today’s Vocabulary

읽다

ikda · read

Polite form 읽어요; read it as ilgeoyo.

저녁에 책을 읽어요.jeonyeog-e chaegeul ilgeoyoI read a book in the evening.

쓰다

sseuda · write

Here 쓰다 means write, not bitter, wear, or use.

이름을 써요.ireumeul sseoyoI write my name.

듣다

deutda · listen; hear

Polite form 들어요; ㄷ changes here. Lesson 16 explains irregular forms.

음악을 들어요.eumageul deureoyoI listen to music.

만나다

mannada · meet

Connect to Lesson 13 time expressions.

주말에 친구를 만나요.jumal-e chingureul mannayoI meet friends on the weekend.

쉬다

swida · rest

Here 쉬다 means rest, not breathe.

일요일에 집에서 쉬어요.iryoil-e jib-eseo swieoyoI rest at home on Sunday.

공부하다

gongbuhada · study

공부 + 하다; familiar expression used for review.

매일 한국어를 공부해요.maeil hangugeoreul gongbuhaeyoI study Korean every day.

Notice the 하다 Family

Activity nounVerbPolite form
공부공부하다공부해요
수영수영하다수영해요
연습연습하다연습해요

The source vocabulary includes activity nouns such as 공부 and 수영. This lesson deliberately teaches their related 하다 verbs. Do not assume that every Korean noun can become a verb simply by adding 하다.

Useful Phrases

책을 읽어요.chaegeul ilgeoyoI read a book.
음악을 들어요.eumageul deureoyoI listen to music.
매일 연습해요.maeil yeonseuphaeyoI practice every day.

Match the action to a natural object: 책을 읽어요, 이름을 써요, 음악을 들어요. These are stronger memory pairs than a verb alone.

Make a Small Routine

Choose one time and one action: 저녁에 책을 읽어요. 아침마다 운동해요. Then choose a place: 집에서 요리해요. You can describe your routine without learning a new sentence ending.

Preview · Two Different Negatives

책을 안 읽어요 means “I do not read the book.” 책을 못 읽어요 means “I cannot read the book.” The second can describe a skill problem or a situation that prevents reading. Lesson 15 Grammar explains the full patterns.

Mini Practice

1. 읽다 → polite form ___.
2. 쓰다, meaning write → polite form ___.
3. 듣다 → polite form ___.

Check the answers

1. 읽어요

2. 써요

3. 들어요

4. 들어요

5. 수영하다

6. Sample: 매일 한국어를 연습해요. Other natural answers are possible.

Today’s Key Point

Learn a natural pair: 책을 읽어요; 음악을 들어요.

하다 family: 공부하다 → 공부해요.

Keep meanings separate: 쓰다 = write here; 쉬다 = rest here.
