SCENE 01 / 04

A bankbook of her own

With Minji beside her, Yuki fills out an application, shows her passport, and stamps her seal. Her first Korean bankbook makes saving every day sound like a wonderful plan.

Yuki

안녕하세요. 이 은행에서 통장을 만들어요.

Hello. I'd like to open a bank account here.

Yuki

도장! 일본에서 가져왔어요! 꾹!

My seal! I brought it from Japan! Stamp!

Yuki

와, 제 첫 한국 통장! 매일 저금해요. 돈도 모아요!

Wow, my first Korean bankbook! I'll save every day and build up my savings!

SCENE 02 / 04

All those zeros—and a promise kept

Yuki changes yen into won and is surprised by the notes, coins, and large number units. Back at the boarding house, she pays Mrs. Park and repays the money she borrowed from Minji.

Yuki

와, 현금이 이렇게 많아요? 동전도 많아요!

Wow, all this cash? So many coins too!

Yuki · Back at the boarding house

아주머니, 이번 달 하숙비예요.

Here's this month's rent, ma'am.

Yuki · At the boarding house

그리고 민지 씨! 지난주에 돈을 빌렸어요. 오늘 갚아요!

And Minji! I borrowed money from you last week. I'm paying you back today!

SCENE 03 / 04

One map in a very big city

City Hall is busy with residents on different errands. Yuki asks how to get to the Japanese Embassy, studies the map with a staff member, and marvels at the size of Seoul.

Wow, there are so many people at City Hall!

Yuki

일본 대사관에 가고 싶어요. 여기에서 멀어요?

I'd like to go to the Japanese Embassy. Is it far from here?

Yuki

서울시는 정말 커요!

Seoul is really huge!

SCENE 04 / 04

A little piece of Korea, sent home

Yuki writes to her mother, buys postcards for her father and grandmother, and addresses an envelope. Later at the counter, she also presents a parcel of Korean snacks to send to Japan.

Yuki · inner thought

엄마, 저는 한국에서 잘 지내요. 친구도 생겼어요…

Mom, I'm doing well in Korea. I made friends too…

Yuki

엽서도 두 장 샀어요. 하나는 아빠, 하나는 할머니예요. 오늘은 편지만 보내요!

I bought two postcards too: one for Dad, one for Grandma. Today I'll send only the letter!

Yuki

그리고 이 소포도요. 한국 과자가 있어요!

And this package too. There are Korean snacks inside!

A note on the original wording: Yuki says “only the letter,” then later adds “this parcel too.” Both lines are preserved. Use the separate practice situation below to compare 도 and 만.

FROM THE ORIGINAL VIDEO · LEARNING REPLAY

A little more. Or just one thing.

These three review turns follow the story in the original video. They practise adding with 도 and limiting with 만. Treat the replay as its own learning situation, not a complete list of what Yuki sent in the main story.

Yuki

은행에 가요. 우체국에도 가요.

I'm going to the bank and also to the post office.

Minji

엽서에 사진도 있어요. 영화 사진도 있어요.

The postcards have photos too. There are movie photos too.

Yuki

오늘은 돈을 조금만 써요. 엄마에게 편지만 보내요.

I'll spend only a little today. I'll send only a letter to Mom.

Small errands, a bigger world. A letter brings home a little closer.

FROM THE STORY TO YOUR OWN WORDS

Also, only—and what you mean.

Add one more thing, or choose only one.

01

Little words from a busy day.

01FROM THE ORIGINAL DIALOGUE

동전도 많아요!

So many coins too!

Yuki has just mentioned the cash. 도 adds coins to what she is noticing. 돈 means money; 동전 means a coin or coins.

02FROM THE VIDEO’S LEARNING REPLAY

엽서에 사진도 있어요.

The postcards have photos too.

사진 means photo; 사진도 means photos too. 도 is attached to the thing being added. The next replay line adds 영화 사진, movie photos.

03FROM THE VIDEO’S LEARNING REPLAY

엄마에게 편지만 보내요.

I'll send only a letter to Mom.

만 limits the item being sent: 편지만, only a letter. It does not mean “only to Mom.” 보내다 means to send. This is a separate learning replay.

One particle changes what is included.

TODAY’S GRAMMAR

N도 · N만

도 adds something: “also” or “too.” 만 limits the choice: “only” or “just.” Put the particle on the noun you want to add or limit.

사진도 있어요. · There are photos too.
편지만 보내요. · I send only a letter.

The forms stay the same after consonants and vowels: 돈도 / 사진도 / 편지도, 돈만 / 사진만 / 편지만. Write them without a space.

In these simple examples, 도 or 만 takes the place of the subject or object particle: 사진이 → 사진도, 편지를 → 편지만. A place particle can stay: 우체국에 + 도 → 우체국에도, “to the post office too,” from the replay.

편지만 limits what you send, not who receives it. The replay also has 조금만, “only a little”; read it for meaning. Today’s quiz focuses on noun + 도/만.

ADD THE LETTER

A parcel + a letter

ATTACH THE PARTICLE

편지 + 도 → 편지도

ADDED COMPARISON PRACTICE

엄마에게 편지도 보내요.

I'll send a letter to Mom too.

Imagine that you are sending Mom a parcel. Add a letter too. 도 adds the letter to what is already being sent; it does not mean “only.”

The parcel, letter, and postcard diagram is an added practice situation. Switching 도 to 만 changes the set of things sent to Mom. It does not rewrite the original story. 만 works with a positive verb: 편지만 보내요 is already complete.
