SCENE 01 / 04

A late arrival. A quiet welcome.

Yuki is late on the first day of the new semester. Hyeju welcomes her into class, and Théo quietly pulls out the last chair. He is her new desk partner.

Yuki sitting beside her quiet new desk partner, Théo. Original Episode 10 artwork.

Yuki

Um… hi. I'm late. I'm so sorry!

Hyeju, the teacher

There's one seat left. Please sit over there.

Yuki · inner thought

From today, he's my desk partner! But he really doesn't talk much…

SCENE 02 / 04

Four students, four different voices

Hyeju takes attendance and asks everyone to introduce themselves. Amina’s greeting fills the room, Lucas keeps it very short, and Théo speaks softly and carefully. Yuki is already enjoying her class.

Amina standing to introduce herself while her classmates listen. Original Episode 10 artwork.

Hyeju, the teacher

First, I'll take attendance. When I call your name, answer "Here!"

Amina · jumping to her feet

Here! Hi! I'm Amina! I'm from Kenya! So nice to meet you!

Théo · softly and clearly

I am… from… France… My name is Théo.

SCENE 03 / 04

Three pencils. One very busy eraser.

The first dictation begins. Yuki notices the pencils, pen, and erasers in Théo’s pencil case, then writes and erases until her paper is black. Théo quietly offers an eraser.

Hyeju, the teacher

Okay, let's start class. Open your textbooks to page 10.

Yuki · inner thought

Wow! Theo has three pencils, one pen, and two erasers in his pencil case... Everything's there!

Théo · quietly offering an eraser

…Here.

SCENE 04 / 04

A question that makes things click

Yuki asks about 이에요 and 예요. Hyeju explains with 학생 and 의사, and Yuki finally understands. At the back, Amina catches Lucas nodding off—just before class ends.

Hyeju explaining 학생이에요 and 의사예요 on the board to her class. Original Episode 10 artwork.

Yuki

Teacher, I have a question! May I ask you something?

Hyeju, the teacher

Is there a final consonant? Then it's "haksaeng-ieyo." No final consonant? Then it's "uisa-yeyo."

Yuki

Oh! Now I get it!

Read the dialogue for the stated quantities; the original artwork is not a counting exercise. The study diagrams below show exact counts.

FROM THE EPISODE SCRIPT · LEARNING REPLAY

Count the people. Count the things.

These three review turns come from the revised episode script. The linked webtoon videos end with a vocabulary card; these sentences are provided here as reading and speaking practice. The replay’s quantities are a separate practice situation, not new facts about the characters’ belongings.

Hyeju, the teacher

There are four students in our class.

Yuki

I have two notebooks and three pencils.

Théo

I have one notebook and four pencils.

A first class. New classmates. One question closer to understanding.

FROM THE STORY TO YOUR OWN WORDS

A little counting, a little confidence.

Count classmates, notebooks, and pencils in Korean.

01

Three counts to take into class.

01FROM THE SCRIPT’S LEARNING REPLAY

There are four students in our class.

명 counts people. This is a review sentence from the episode script.

02FROM THE SCRIPT’S LEARNING REPLAY

I have two notebooks.

권 counts bound books and notebooks. 둘 becomes 두: 두 권. Keep a space between the number and counter.

03FROM THE SCRIPT’S LEARNING REPLAY

I have three pencils.

개 is a general item counter used for pencils in this episode. 셋 becomes 세. 자루 is also a more specific counter for pencils; today we practise the original wording, 개.

02

Choose the counter. Then count.

TODAY’S GRAMMAR

To count people and these classroom objects, use a native Korean number with a counter. The counter tells us what kind of thing we are counting.

THREE COUNTERS FOR TODAY
명people학생 네 명
권books / notebooks공책 두 권
개general items연필 세 개

Before these counters, change 하나·둘·셋·넷 to 한·두·세·네. Write a space before the counter: 두 권, 세 개. In the story, 자리가 하나 있어요 uses 하나 on its own, without a counter.

Korean also has Sino-Korean numbers: 일·이·삼·사. A page number uses that system: the story’s 10쪽 is read 십 쪽. For today’s 명·권·개 examples, use 한·두·세·네. Learn each number together with its unit; this is not a rule for every Korean counter.

PEOPLE · 명

4 students · 네 명

NUMBER + COUNTER

FROM THE SCRIPT’S LEARNING REPLAY

There are four students in our class.

Use 명 for people. 넷 changes to 네 before the counter. The four figures illustrate the script’s review sentence.

The animated symbols are added learning diagrams. The first three sentences come from the script’s review section; the one-notebook sentence is an added variation. The episode uses 개 for pencils. 자루 is also a valid, more specific pencil counter.
