Lesson 29 · V-

HYEJU LANGUAGE LAB · BEGINNER · 29

Use V-고 싶어 하다 in the context of family and friends’ wishes. Work through the form, the meaning and the examples before trying the six practice questions.

Goal: choose the correct form for the situation, then make a natural sentence of your own.

How the pattern works

Use -고 싶어 하다 to describe another person’s desire as you observe or understand it. The polite present form is -고 싶어해요.

No 받침-based change is needed.

For your own current wish, normally say Ask someone directly with 어디에 가고 싶어요? For an observed third-person wish, use

Keep a space after 고. If you need to report the person’s exact words, a quotation is clearer than presenting an inference as fact.

Examples in context

chinguneun jejudo-e yeohaenghago sipeohaeyo

My friend wants to travel to Jeju.

chinguneun seoureseo salgo sipeohaeyo

My friend wants to live in Seoul.

Do not mechanically replace every third-person 싶어요. Context, quotation and viewpoint matter. Here we practice a clear contrast between my own wish and a wish I observe in another person.
