Respecting the Subject: -(으)시-, 께서 & 께

Introduction / Review
요 addresses the listener politely; -(으)시- honors the subject. 께서 marks an honored subject, while 께 marks an honored recipient. These roles are different.
N = noun; V = action verb; A = descriptive verb. Romanization is a reading aid.

- Vowel + 시; consonant + 으시: 가다 → 가세요; 읽다 → 읽으세요. Final ㄹ drops: 살다 → 사세요. Past: 가셨어요; future: 가실 거예요.
- Special vocabulary: 있다 → 계시다 for a person’s presence; 자다 → 주무시다; 먹다 → 드시다/잡수시다.
- 께서 marks the subject: 선생님께서 오세요. 께 marks the recipient: 선생님께 책을 드려요. 드리다 humbly describes giving to an honored person.

Common mistakes
Do not honor yourself with 제가 가세요. Use 책이 있어요, not 책이 계세요, for an inanimate book. 께 refers to an honored recipient; it does not replace the destination 에 in 학교에 가요.
먹다 has its own respectful verb: 드시다 → 드세요.
When a respected person is somewhere, 있다 becomes 계시다.
Giving to an elder uses 드리다.
Never use -(으)시- for yourself.
