V-다(가) 보니(까)as I kept doing…, I found / ended up…
-다(가) 보니(까) means that while you kept doing something, you realized something or a result came about: 매일 한국 드라마를 보다 보니 한국어가 늘었어요 (As I kept watching Korean dramas every day, my Korean improved).

A situation you already know
A friend is surprised that you now love spicy food.
Eating with Korean friends a lot, I came to love spicy food.
The change came from repeating the same action over time. -다 보니까 shows that process.
Build the form
- 보다 → 보 + 다 보니 → 보다 보니Complete expression
- 먹다 → 먹 + 다 보니까 → 먹다 보니까Complete expression
- 살다 → 살 + 다 보니 → 살다 보니Complete expression
- 이야기하다 → 이야기하 + 다가 보니 → 이야기하다가 보니Complete expression
- 일하다 → 일하 + 다 보니 → 일하다 보니Complete expression
- Verb stem + -다(가) 보니(까); 가 and 까 are optional: 보다 보니, 보다가 보니까.
- The first action is repeated or continues for a while. (With adjectives and 이다, -다 보니 gives a background reason: 바쁘다 보니 연락을 못 했어요.)
- The second clause is a discovery or result, usually past: -았/었어요, -게 됐어요, -더라고요.
- Very common pair: -다 보니 … -게 됐어요 (came to…, Lesson 72).
- Also used for “before I knew it”: 이야기하다 보니 벌써 12시였어요.
- No commands or suggestions in the second clause.
Think in Korean · an English-speaker’s guide
- English “the more I did it…”, “after a while…”, or “before I knew it…” cover this idea.
- -다 보니 looks back at what happened; -다 보면 looks forward: “if you keep doing it, you will…” (practice it below).
- It works best with time and repetition: one quick action doesn’t fit.
Six examples in context
