An Action Interrupted or Changed: -다가
Learn An Action Interrupted or Changed: -다가 with form rules, natural examples, common mistakes, romanization, and six practice questions with answers.
Introduction / Review
-다가 shows an ongoing action that changes, stops, or is interrupted by another event. It is useful for little stories about what happened during your day.
N = noun; V = action verb; A = descriptive verb. Romanization is a reading aid.
Today’s Grammar / Explanation
- Attach 다가 to the action stem: 가다 → 가다가; 공부하다 → 공부하다가; 걷다 → 걷다가.
- Keep the original stem before ㄷ: 듣다 → 듣다가; 만들다 → 만들다가. Do not use the changed 아/어 stem.
- In basic action-change examples, the same person is involved in both events. Put past tense on the final event when telling a past story.

-았/었다가
창문을 열었다가 추워서 닫았어요.After completing A, the opposite or something else happened.
| Pattern | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| -다가 | while doing A, then something else | 집에 가다가 친구를 만났어요 |

| -(으)면서 | at the same time | 걸으면서 이야기해요 |
| -고 | after A, B | 숙제하고 놀아요 |
Common mistakes
-다가 does not ordinarily mean “after finishing.” 공부하다가 쉬었어요 suggests stopping study to rest. 공부한 후에 쉬었어요 explicitly presents resting after study. Completed movement followed by a return uses forms such as 갔다가; that is recognition material beyond today’s core pattern.
With -다가 the subject normally stays the same. For two people, use -는데.
You went and came back — A was completed — so use -았/었다가.
You fell asleep while still watching, so use -다가.
Two actions at the same time → -(으)면서.
