Lesson 12 · Place + 에 / 에서
Hyeju’s Beginner Korean Grammar Class · Lesson 12
Place + 에 / 에서
Choose a particle by what happens at the place.
One Place, Three Meanings
The same place takes different particles. Ask: destination, location, or activity? Today extends the location pattern from Lesson 02.
Today’s Grammar
N means a noun. Here, N is a place. Both particles attach directly: 학교에, 학교에서. They do not change after a consonant or vowel: 집에 / 학교에; 집에서 / 학교에서.
Part 1 · 에: Destination or Location
Use place + 에 for a destination with 가요 (go) or 와요 (come). Use place + 에 있어요 / 없어요 to say where someone or something is, or is not.
Part 2 · 에서: Where an Activity Happens
Use place + 에서 + action for the setting of an activity. Think 공부해요 (study), 먹어요 (eat), 마셔요 (drink), 일해요 (work), or 운동해요 (exercise).
Compare the Meanings
| Sentence | What it tells us |
|---|---|
| 도서관에 가요. | Destination: going to the library. |
| 도서관에 있어요. | Location: being at the library. |
| 도서관에서 공부해요. | Activity: studying at the library. |
Hyeju’s Note · Learn the Meaning
“Movement always takes 에” is too broad. 에서 can also mark a starting point (“from”), such as 집에서 학교에 가요. Today’s main practice is location and activity; the starting-point use is a preview.
에 also marks time, which Lesson 13 will explain. Expressions such as 살아요 have more flexible usage; do not apply today’s beginner comparison as a rule for every verb.
