Lesson 20 · 부터 / 까지 & 에서부터: Times and Routes
Hyeju’s Beginner Korean Grammar Class · Lesson 20
부터 / 까지 & 에서부터: Times and Routes
State time ranges with 부터 and 까지, and travel routes with 에서(부터) and 까지, with examples and six practice questions.
Introduction & Review
Lesson 13 used 에 for a particular time, and Lesson 12 used 에서 for an activity place. Today, describe a range: 아홉 시부터 다섯 시까지, or a route: 서울에서 부산까지. N means a noun. The starting and ending expressions attach directly to their time or place nouns. All schedules and routes below are practice examples.
Today’s Grammar
Place + 에서(부터) … Place + 까지
부터 marks a starting point and 까지 an endpoint. For a physical departure place, 에서 is the natural beginner choice; 에서부터 makes the starting point more explicit. Neither form changes after a consonant or vowel: 집에서 / 학교에서; 서울까지 / 부산까지.
1 · Time: From … Until …
Both endpoints are useful but not always necessary. 아홉 시부터 일해요 gives only the starting time, and 다섯 시까지 일해요 gives only the finishing time. 까지 specifies the limit; it does not by itself mean “for five hours.” For a real schedule, add 오전/오후 and any needed date information.
2 · Place: From … To …
Place + 에서 marks the starting place here. In 도서관에서 공부해요 it marks the activity place instead; read the whole sentence. 에서부터 highlights where the route starts. 부터 can have spatial or sequence uses in Korean too, but today’s practical departure pattern is place + 에서(부터).
Compare 에, 부터, 에서, and 까지
| Pattern | Focus |
|---|---|
| 아홉 시에 시작해요. | The event starts at nine: one time point. |
| 아홉 시부터 다섯 시까지 일해요. | The activity spans a time range. |
| 학교에 가요. | School is the destination. |
| 집에서 학교까지 가요. | Home is the starting point; school is the route endpoint. |
| 학교에서 공부해요. | School is the activity setting, not a departure point. |
Hyeju’s Note · Particles Attach, Time Units Separate
Write 아홉 시부터: a space separates the number 아홉 and the unit 시, but 부터 stays attached to 시. Likewise, 서울에서부터 is one particle-marked place word, without spaces between 서울, 에서, and 부터. For a basic time range, use 시부터 rather than 시에서.
Mini Dialogue
A: 몇 시부터 몇 시까지 일해요?
myeot sibuteo myeot sikkaji ilhaeyo · From what time until what time do you work?
B: 아홉 시부터 다섯 시까지 일해요.
ahop sibuteo daseot sikkaji ilhaeyo · I work from nine until five.
A: 집에서 회사까지 어떻게 가요?
jib-eseo hoesakkaji eotteoke gayo · How do you get from home to your workplace?
B: 버스로 가요.
beoseuro gayo · I go by bus.
몇 시 asks what time; 어떻게 asks how. In a real conversation, add a.m./p.m. when needed. The final answer borrows the transport pattern from Lesson 14.

Common mistakes
아홉 시에서 다섯 시까지 일해요 → For this basic time range, use 아홉 시부터 다섯 시까지 일해요.
집에 학교까지 가요 → 집에서 학교까지 가요 for a journey starting at home. Do not swap the endpoints: 서울에서 부산까지 starts in Seoul and ends in Busan.
Write 오전 아홉 시부터, not 오전 아홉시 부터. Do not add 에 after 까지 in today’s pattern: 학교까지 가요, not 학교까지에 가요.
For a starting place, use 에서 (or 에서부터).
For a starting time, use 부터.
부터 replaces 에. Don’t stack them.
까지 replaces 에 too: 밤까지.
