-(으)ㄹ지도 모르다Might… / May…

-(으)ㄹ지도 모르다 literally means “(I) don’t even know whether…,” so: “it might….” It shows a real possibility and often comes with advice: 비가 올지도 모르니까 우산을 가져가세요.

A situation you already know

The sky is getting dark just as your friend is heading out.

비가 올지도 모르니까 우산 가져가요.

It might rain, so take an umbrella.

Rain isn’t certain, but it’s possible. -(으)ㄹ지도 모르니까 uses that possibility as a reason.

Think in Korean · an English-speaker’s guide

  • English uses a small helper word, “might.” Korean says “I don’t even know whether…”; 도 adds “even the possibility.”
  • It often comes before -(으)니까 + advice: 늦을지도 모르니까 먼저 가세요.
  • -(으)ㄹ 것 같다 sounds more confident (“looks like”); -(으)ㄹ지도 모르다 is just a possibility.
