-(으)ㄹ 정도로So… that… / To the point that…
-(으)ㄹ 정도로 describes a degree by giving an example of what it leads to: 눈물이 날 정도로 웃었어요 (I laughed so hard I cried). At the end of a sentence, use -(으)ㄹ 정도예요 (it’s so… that…).

A situation you already know
You tell a friend about the tteokbokki you had yesterday.
That tteokbokki was so spicy it made me cry.
How spicy? Spicy enough to bring tears. 정도로 links the example to the degree.

Think in Korean · an English-speaker’s guide
- English “so + adjective + that…” puts the degree first. Korean gives the example first and the quality last: 눈물이 날 정도로 + 매웠어요.
- Common expressions: 눈물이 날 정도로, 배가 아플 정도로 (laugh), 믿을 수 없을 정도로, 시간 가는 줄 모를 정도로.
- -도록 can also show degree (목이 쉬도록), but -(으)ㄹ 정도로 is more common and works with any verb or adjective.
Six examples in context
I laughed so hard my stomach hurt.
That singer sings so well it gives me goosebumps.
Yesterday I was so tired I could barely walk.
Michael speaks Korean so well you’d think he was Korean.
The room is so cold my hands are nearly freezing.
It was so fun I lost track of time.
Compare with related patterns
-도록 (degree)
목이 쉬도록 노래했어요.Also shows degree (Lesson 101), mostly with verbs.
너무 -아/어서
너무 매워서 눈물이 났어요.“It was so spicy that I cried.” Cause and result; -(으)ㄹ 정도로 describes the degree.
-(으)ㄹ 만하다
먹을 만해요.“It’s okay to eat.” An evaluation, not a degree (Lesson 104).
| Pattern | Choose it when… |
|---|---|
| -(으)ㄹ 정도로 | describe how much, with an example |
| -(으)ㄹ 정도예요 | the same, at the end of a sentence |
| -도록 | until / to the point that (mostly verbs) |
| 너무 -아/어서 | cause → result |
Common mistakes
ㄹ stems don’t add 을.
Use -(으)ㄹ before 정도로.
Use the degree expression once, then the adjective normally (춥다 → 추워요).
The example (배가 아프다) takes 정도로; the main action comes last.
