Reasons and Connected Actions: -아/어서
Learn Reasons and Connected Actions: -아/어서 with form rules, natural examples, common mistakes, romanization, and six practice questions with answers.
Introduction / Review
-아/어서 connects a reason to its result, or closely related actions in a natural sequence. “I’m tired, so I rest” and “I go to a café and drink coffee there” illustrate its two core uses.
N = noun; V = action verb; A = descriptive verb. Romanization is a reading aid.
Today’s Grammar / Explanation
- Use 아/어 + 서: 가다 → 가서; 먹다 → 먹어서; 하다 → 해서. Irregulars: 춥다 → 추워서; 듣다 → 들어서.
- For a reason, the first clause explains the second: 바빠서 못 가요. For linked actions, the first creates the setting for the second: 카페에 가서 커피를 마셔요.
- In basic beginner sentences, put past tense at the end: 아파서 쉬었어요. Noun reasons use (이)라서: 학생이라서, 친구라서.
