-는 편이다 / -(으)ㄴ 편이다Tend to… / Rather… / On the … side

-는 편이다 places something on a scale without being absolute: 저는 매운 음식을 잘 먹는 편이에요 (I’m pretty good with spicy food). With adjectives: 이 동네는 조용한 편이에요 (This neighborhood is on the quiet side).

A situation you already know

At a job interview, you’re asked about your personality.

저는 꼼꼼한 편이에요.

I’m on the meticulous side.

You don’t claim to be perfectly meticulous. 편이에요 sounds modest and natural.

Think in Korean · an English-speaker’s guide

  • English “I tend to / I’m rather / I’m kind of” match. Koreans use it a lot to sound modest, especially about themselves.
  • It compares with a general standard: 이 가방은 가벼운 편이에요 (It’s on the light side compared with other bags).
  • For a firm habit or fact, use the plain form: 매일 운동해요.
