People and Things That Do Something: V-는 N

Learn People and Things That Do Something: V-는 N with form rules, natural examples, common mistakes, romanization, and six practice questions with answers.

Introduction / Review

Use V-는 N to describe a person, place, or thing through a present or habitual action. “A person who teaches” becomes 가르치는 사람. Korean puts the whole description before the noun.

N = noun; V = action verb; A = descriptive verb. Romanization is a reading aid.

Today’s Grammar / Explanation

  1. Attach 는 to the action stem: 가다 → 가는 곳; 먹다 → 먹는 음식; 일하다 → 일하는 사람.
  2. Final ㄹ drops: 살다 → 사는 사람; 만들다 → 만드는 음식. Keep other stems before 는: 듣다 → 듣는 음악.
  3. The described noun’s role comes from context: 제가 읽는 책 is the book I read; 책을 읽는 사람 is the person who reads a book.
