HYEJU LANGUAGE LAB · INTERMEDIATE 23 · LESSON 108
-는지 / -(으)ㄴ지 / 인지Whether… / Where… / What… (inside a sentence)
-는지 turns a question into part of a bigger sentence: 어디 살아요? → 어디 사는지 알아요? (Do you know where he lives?). It is followed by verbs such as 알다, 모르다, 궁금하다, 물어보다 and 확인하다.

A situation you already know
You’re meeting a friend at a big station and can’t find the exit.
Do you know where Exit 3 is?
The question inside is 어디에 있어요? It becomes 있는지, and 알아요? is the main verb.

Think in Korean · an English-speaker’s guide
- English changes word order (Do you know where he lives?). Korean keeps the question word and only changes the ending: 어디 사는지.
- “If / whether” has no separate word: 내일 오는지 물어봐 주세요 (Please ask if he’s coming tomorrow).
- -(으)ㄹ지 is common for an uncertain future: 비가 올지 모르겠어요 (I don’t know if it’ll rain).
Six examples in context
Do you know who that person is?
I’m not sure if this restaurant is any good.
Please check what time the meeting starts.
I wonder why my friend got angry.
Can you tell me if these clothes suit me?
I don’t know whether it will rain tomorrow or not.
Compare with related patterns
-냐고 하다
친구가 어디 사냐고 물었어요.Reports a question someone asked (Lesson 94). -는지 puts a question inside your own sentence.
-(으)ㄹ지도 모르다
비가 올지도 몰라요.“It might rain.” A guess (Lesson 113), not an embedded question.
-아/어서 그런지
피곤해서 그런지 졸려요.“Maybe because I’m tired, I’m sleepy.” A guessed reason (Lesson 107).
| Pattern | Choose it when… |
|---|---|
| -는지 / -(으)ㄴ지 / 인지 | a question inside a sentence (where, what, if) |
| -(으)ㄹ지 | an uncertain question about the future |
| -냐고 하다 | reporting someone’s question |
| -(으)ㄹ지도 모르다 | might |
