Things You Want to Do: -고 싶어요
Learn Things You Want to Do: -고 싶어요 with form rules, natural examples, common mistakes, romanization, and six practice questions with answers.
Introduction / Review
Build a travel wish list with -고 싶어요, “I want to do ….” Attach it to an action verb. In an ordinary statement it usually describes your own wish; in a question it asks about the listener’s wish.
N = noun; V = action verb; A = descriptive verb. Romanization is a reading aid.
Today’s Grammar / Explanation
- Remove 다 and add 고 싶어요: 가다 → 가고 싶어요; 먹다 → 먹고 싶어요; 배우다 → 배우고 싶어요.
- Keep the dictionary stem before 고: 듣다 → 듣고 싶어요; 만들다 → 만들고 싶어요.
- Negate the wish with -고 싶지 않아요: 가고 싶지 않아요. This means you do not want to go, not that you are unable to go.

Common mistakes
For an ordinary third-person report, use -고 싶어 해요: 유키 씨는 가고 싶어 해요 (“Yuki wants to go”). This is a small extension, not the main quiz target. Do not attach 고 싶어요 directly to a noun: 커피를 마시고 싶어요, not 커피고 싶어요.
For someone else’s wish, use -고 싶어 해요.
고 attaches directly to the stem: 쉬고.
싶어요 needs a verb + 고 in front of it. To want a thing, add a verb like 사다.
The negative is -고 싶지 않아요 (or 안 가고 싶어요).
