Lesson 27 · Willingness and Inference: -겠-
Hyeju’s Beginner Korean Grammar Class · Lesson 27
Willingness and Inference: -겠-
Use -겠- for willingness and inference, keep dictionary stems, and practice 알겠습니다 and 잘 먹겠습니다 in the right situations.
Introduction & Review
-겠- can express a speaker’s willingness or a judgment based on a situation. It is not a substitute for every English future “will.” Compare a planned trip, 갈 거예요, with volunteering now, 제가 하겠습니다.
N = noun; V = action verb; A = descriptive verb. Romanization is a reading aid.
Today’s Grammar / Explanation
Add 겠 to a V/A stem, then the speech ending: 하다 → 하겠어요 / 하겠습니다; 맛있다 → 맛있겠어요.
The stem stays before ㄱ: 듣다 → 듣겠어요, 춥다 → 춥겠어요. Do not copy the changed -아/어요 stem into this pattern.
For a first-person commitment, 제가 …-겠습니다 is common in formal settings. For inference, use a clue such as a delicious-looking meal: 맛있겠어요.

Common mistakes
알겠습니다 (“Understood”) and 잘 먹겠습니다 (said before eating) are useful conventional expressions. Learn their social use as phrases. A person can promise 제가 가겠습니다, but 비가 오겠어요 is an inference, not a promise about the weather.
After tasting, you’re no longer guessing, so use -네요. -겠어요 is for guessing beforehand.
This greeting is a fixed formal phrase: 처음 뵙겠습니다.
-겠- attaches directly to the stem: 먹 + 겠.
모르겠어요 sounds softer and more polite than 몰라요, especially to a teacher.
