Lesson 14 · N(으)로: Transport, Tools & Direction
Hyeju’s Beginner Korean Grammar Class · Lesson 14
N(으)로
Say “by bus,” “with a pencil,” and “to the left.”
Add the Travel Method
You can already say 학교에 가요. Now add how you travel: 버스로 학교에 가요. Today focuses on transport, tools, and directions. N means a noun.
Today’s Grammar
(으) means that the 으 part appears only when needed. The particle has two forms: 으로 and 로. Attach it directly to the noun.
Part 1 · Choose the Form
| Noun ending | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Consonant except ㄹ | 으로 | 책 → 책으로; 왼쪽 → 왼쪽으로 |
| Vowel | 로 | 버스 → 버스로 |
| Final ㄹ | 로 | 지하철 → 지하철로; 연필 → 연필로 |
Use 책으로 after final ㄱ, but 지하철로 after final ㄹ. The final consonant in the written noun decides the form. Do not use 지하철으로.
Part 2 · Transport and Tools
With vehicles, English often uses “by.” With a tool, it often uses “with.” 써요 means “write,” from 쓰다; 연필 is review from the classroom vocabulary.
Part 3 · Direction
Here, (으)로 shows a direction or route. It does not state that you are already there.
Compare 에 and (으)로
| Pattern | Focus |
|---|---|
| 학교에 가요. | School is the destination. |
| 학교로 가요. | Heading toward or to school. |
| 버스로 학교에 가요. | Bus = travel method; school = destination. |
| 학교에 있어요. | Being located at school. |
With 가요, 에 and (으)로 can overlap, depending on context. For a beginner’s simple location statement with 있어요, use 에. Do not replace every 에 with 로.

학교로 있어요. → For a simple location, 학교에 있어요.
Other meanings, such as material and role, exist. This lesson does not claim to cover every use of (으)로.
Nouns ending in ㄹ take 로, not 으로.
The tool you use takes (으)로.
The means of transport takes (으)로, not 을/를. (버스를 타고 가요 is another way to say it.)
