One Place, Three Meanings

학교에 가요.hakgyo-e gayoI go to school.
학교에 있어요.hakgyo-e isseoyoI am at school.
학교에서 공부해요.hakgyo-eseo gongbuhaeyoI study at school.

The same place takes different particles. Ask: destination, location, or activity? Today extends the location pattern from Lesson 02.

Today’s Grammar

N에 / N에서

N means a noun. Here, N is a place. Both particles attach directly: 학교에, 학교에서. They do not change after a consonant or vowel: 집에 / 학교에; 집에서 / 학교에서.

Part 1 · 에: Destination or Location

Use place + 에 for a destination with 가요 (go) or 와요 (come). Use place + 에 있어요 / 없어요 to say where someone or something is, or is not.

도서관에 가요.doseogwan-e gayoI go to the library.
친구가 교실에 있어요.chinguga gyosil-e isseoyoMy friend is in the classroom.
책이 가방에 있어요.chaegi gabang-e isseoyoThe book is in the bag.

Part 2 · 에서: Where an Activity Happens

Use place + 에서 + action for the setting of an activity. Think 공부해요 (study), 먹어요 (eat), 마셔요 (drink), 일해요 (work), or 운동해요 (exercise).

도서관에서 공부해요.doseogwan-eseo gongbuhaeyoI study at the library.
식당에서 밥을 먹어요.sikdang-eseo babeul meogeoyoI eat a meal at a restaurant.
카페에서 커피를 마셔요.kape-eseo keopireul masyeoyoI drink coffee at a café.
회사에서 일해요.hoesa-eseo ilhaeyoI work at my workplace.

Compare the Meanings

SentenceWhat it tells us
도서관에 가요.Destination: going to the library.
도서관에 있어요.Location: being at the library.
도서관에서 공부해요.Activity: studying at the library.

Hyeju’s Note · Learn the Meaning

“Movement always takes 에” is too broad. 에서 can also mark a starting point (“from”), such as 집에서 학교에 가요. Today’s main practice is location and activity; the starting-point use is a preview.

에 also marks time, which Lesson 13 will explain. Expressions such as 살아요 have more flexible usage; do not apply today’s beginner comparison as a rule for every verb.
