-든지 · N(이)든지either… or / whether… or not / any-

-든지 says the choice doesn’t matter: 전화하든지 문자하든지 연락 주세요 (Call or text, either way, just contact me). With question words it means “any-”: 언제든지 (anytime), 뭐든지 (anything), 어디든지 (anywhere).

언제든지 = “at any time, it doesn’t matter when.” It sounds warm and welcoming.

Verbs and adjectives: stem + -든지 → 가든지, 먹든지.
Nouns: vowel + 든지, consonant + 이든지 → 커피든지, 물이든지.
Two choices: A-든지 B-든지 (하세요) → 버스를 타든지 택시를 타든지 하세요.
Whether or not: -든지 말든지 → 가든지 말든지 마음대로 해요.
Question words + (이)든지 = any-: 누구든지, 언제든지, 어디든지, 뭐든지.
Short form -든 is common in speech: 뭐든, 언제든, 가든 말든.

Think in Korean · an English-speaker’s guide

English “whatever”, “whenever”, “either… or…, it doesn’t matter” capture the feeling.
-든지 말든지 can sound cold (“I don’t care whether you go or not”), so watch your tone.
Don’t mix it up with -던지 (with ㅓ), which is about past feelings: 얼마나 춥던지 (it was so cold that…).

Tell me whatever you want to eat. My treat.

버스를 타든지 지하철을 타든지 늦지만 마세요.

Take the bus or the subway, just don’t be late.

Compare with related patterns

-거나

주말에는 영화를 보거나 쉬어요.

“On weekends I watch movies or rest.” Simple “or” for listing options (Lesson 66).

-든지

영화를 보든지 쉬든지 마음대로 해요.

“Watch a movie or rest — whatever you like.” Stresses that the choice doesn’t matter.

아무 N(이)나

아무거나 괜찮아요.

“Anything is fine.” Similar to 뭐든지, a bit more casual.

Choice = 든지 (ㅡ), not 던지 (ㅓ).

Consonant-ending noun → 이든지.

전화하든지 문자하든지 주세요.전화하든지 문자하든지 해 주세요.

주세요 alone has no verb to attach to. Wrap the choices with 하다: 해 주세요.

언제든지 연락하지 마세요.언제든지 연락하세요.

언제든지 goes with positive invitations, not prohibitions.
