SCENE 01 / 04

The table is full. So is the welcome.

Mrs. Park serves breakfast: rice, soup, rolled omelet, and seaweed. Yuki looks at the full bowls and plates—and suddenly feels very hungry.

Mrs. Park welcomes Yuki to a table of rice, soup, and side dishes.

Yuki

와, 그릇에 밥이 가득해요! 이 접시에도 음식이 많아요.

Wow, the bowl is full of rice! There's lots of food on this plate too.

Minji

반찬은 계란말이하고 김이에요. 따뜻한 국도 있어요.

The side dishes are rolled omelet and seaweed. There's warm soup too.

Yuki

냄새가 정말 좋아요. 배가 고파요!

It smells so good. I'm hungry!

SCENE 02 / 04

A spoon, chopsticks, and a thank-you.

Yuki learns which utensil to use, invites Mrs. Park to start first, and says 잘 먹겠습니다 before the meal.

Yuki learning to use a spoon and chopsticks at breakfast with Mrs. Park.

Yuki

국은 숟가락으로 먹어요?

Do we eat the soup with a spoon?

Yuki

아주머니, 먼저 잡수세요.

Please start first, ma'am.

Yuki

잘 먹겠습니다!

Thank you for the meal!

SCENE 03 / 04

Spicy kimchi. Bland soup. Bitter coffee.

The kimchi is spicy for Yuki, so she asks for water. The soup needs a little salt. Junho’s coffee is bitter—until he adds sugar.

Minji and Junho help Yuki after she tastes the spicy kimchi.

Yuki

아, 저한테는 많이 매워요! 물 좀 주세요.

Oh, it's very spicy for me! Please pass me some water.

Yuki

아니요, 안 짜요. 조금 싱거워요.

No, it's not salty. It's a little bland.

Junho

저는 밥을 다 먹었어요. 지금 커피를 마시고 있어요. 으, 써요!

I've finished my rice. I'm drinking coffee now. Ugh, it's bitter!

SCENE 04 / 04

Dinner is hot. A little patience helps.

At dinner, Yuki lets the doenjang stew cool and enjoys the soft tofu. She is full, so Mrs. Park suggests taking smaller portions next time.

Yuki enjoying soft tofu after the hot stew has cooled.

Yuki

앗, 뜨거워요! 조금 기다릴게요.

Oh, it's hot! I'll wait a little.

Yuki

이제 괜찮아요. 두부가 정말 부드러워요!

It's fine now. The tofu is really soft!

Yuki

아니요, 배가 불러요. 너무 많이 받았어요. 조금 남겨도 돼요?

No, I'm full. I took too much. Is it okay to leave a little?

The story moves from breakfast to dinner. The tastes belong to different foods: spicy and sour kimchi, bland soup, and bitter coffee that turns sweet with sugar.

FROM THE EPISODE SCRIPT · LEARNING REPLAY

Cooking. Eating. Drinking water.

These three turns come from the episode script’s learning replay. The linked videos finish with six vocabulary cards and do not include this spoken replay. Practise these lines here after reading the story.

Mrs. Park

지금 요리하고 있어요. 밥은 여기 있어요.

I'm cooking now. The rice is here.

Minji

유키 씨는 지금 밥을 먹고 있어요.

Yuki is eating now.

Yuki

김치가 매워요! 지금 물을 마시고 있어요.

The kimchi is spicy! I'm drinking water now.

From an empty bowl to a happy, full stomach.

FROM THE STORY TO YOUR OWN WORDS

Bring this moment into words.

Use -고 있어요 to describe an action happening now.

01

At the table, a few words go a long way.

01FROM THE ORIGINAL DIALOGUE

잘 먹겠습니다!

Thank you for the meal!

A set phrase before eating, expressing appreciation for the meal. Learn it as a whole here; the ending -겠습니다 is not a grammar target for this episode.

Back to scene 02 ↗
02FROM THE ORIGINAL DIALOGUE

지금 커피를 마시고 있어요.

I'm drinking coffee now.

An exact sentence from Junho’s longer line. 지금 means “now.” 마시다 → 마시고 있어요 makes it clear that the drinking is in progress.

03FROM THE SCRIPT’S LEARNING REPLAY

유키 씨는 지금 밥을 먹고 있어요.

Yuki is eating now.

From the script’s learning replay. 먹다 → 먹고 있어요: Yuki is in the middle of eating. 밥 can refer to rice or, more broadly, a meal.

02

A little word for what is happening now.

TODAY’S GRAMMAR

V-고 있어요

Say that an action is in progress. At the table, someone is cooking, someone is eating, and someone is drinking.

BUILD THE FORMV stem + 고 있어요

먹다 → 먹 + 고 있어요
먹고 있어요

AN ACTION IN PROGRESS지금 밥을 먹고 있어요.

I am eating now.

Remove 다 from the dictionary form, then add 고 있어요. Keep a space between 고 and 있어요: 요리하다 → 요리하고 있어요; 마시다 → 마시고 있어요.

매일 아침 밥을 먹어요 describes a routine because of “every morning.” 지금 밥을 먹고 있어요 focuses on eating in progress. The simple present 먹어요 can also describe a present situation, depending on context.

Use action verbs in these examples. A taste is a state: 김치가 매워요 (“The kimchi is spicy”). Do not turn 맵다 into 매워고 있어요.

HAPPENING NOW

요리하다 → 요리하고 있어요

FROM THE SCRIPT’S LEARNING REPLAY

지금 요리하고 있어요. 밥은 여기 있어요.

I'm cooking now. The rice is here.

요리하다 → 요리하 + 고 있어요. Keep 하 before 고; leave a space before 있어요.

Coffee is an exact sentence from the story. Cooking, eating, and water come from the script’s learning replay. “Every morning” and “Right now” are added comparison examples; they do not establish a character’s routine.
