HYEJU LANGUAGE LAB · INTERMEDIATE 46 · LESSON 131
-는 대신(에) / N 대신(에)instead of… / in exchange for…
대신(에) has two jobs. (1) Replacement: 커피 대신에 차를 마셔요 (I drink tea instead of coffee). (2) Trade-off: 월급이 많은 대신에 일이 힘들어요 (The pay is high, but in exchange, the work is hard).

A situation you already know
Your friend helped you move, and you want to pay her back.
In return for your help, I’ll buy dinner tonight.
One thing (her help) is balanced by another (your treat). That exchange is the second meaning of 대신에.

Think in Korean · an English-speaker’s guide
- English splits these into “instead of” and “but in exchange / in return” — Korean uses one word.
- For meaning 2, think of a balance scale: 싼 대신에 품질이 별로예요 (cheap, but the quality isn’t great).
- Commands are fine with 대신에: 오늘 쉬는 대신에 내일 일찍 오세요.
