HYEJU LANGUAGE LAB · INTERMEDIATE 22 · LESSON 107
-아/어서 그런지Perhaps because… / Maybe it’s because…
-아/어서 그런지 suggests a reason without being sure: “Maybe because I slept well, I feel great today.” It is -아/어서 (because) + 그렇다 (be so) + -ㄴ지 (whether), so it means “maybe because of that.”

A situation you already know
A friend says you look great today.
Maybe because I slept well last night, I feel great today.
You’re not 100% sure sleep is the reason, but it might be. 그런지 adds that “maybe.”

Think in Korean · an English-speaker’s guide
- English says “maybe because / probably because.” Korean puts the softener (그런지) right after the reason.
- It’s useful for being polite or modest: 제가 설명을 잘 못해서 그런지… (Maybe because I didn’t explain it well…).
- Compare: 바빠서 못 갔어요 (I couldn’t go because I was busy — sure). 바빠서 그런지 연락이 없어요 (No word from him, maybe because he’s busy — a guess).
Six examples in context
The roads are really busy, maybe because it’s the weekend.
I have no energy, maybe because I skipped breakfast.
There aren’t many customers today, maybe because of the rain.
Maybe because I practice every day, my pronunciation has improved a lot.
My friend hasn’t been in touch lately, maybe because they’re busy.
I can’t sleep, maybe because I drank a lot of coffee.

Common mistakes
No past tense before -아/어서.
Nouns: (이)라서 그런지.
A command can’t follow it; use -(으)니까.
When you know the reason for your own action, plain -아/어서 is enough. 그런지 is for guesses.
