HYEJU LANGUAGE LAB · INTERMEDIATE 20 · LESSON 105
-지 않으면 안 되다Must… / Really have to…
-지 않으면 안 되다 literally means “if you don’t…, it’s not okay.” Two negatives make a strong positive: you really must. It is stronger and a little more formal than -아/어야 하다/되다.

A situation you already know
Your passport expires next week, and you’re flying next month.
I absolutely have to renew my passport this week.
Not renewing = not okay. The double negative stresses that there is no way around it.
Build the form
- 가다 → 가 + 지 않으면 안 되다 → 가지 않으면 안 돼요Complete expression
- 먹다 → 먹 + 지 않으면 안 되다 → 먹지 않으면 안 돼요Complete expression
- 하다 → 하 + 지 않으면 안 되다 → 하지 않으면 안 돼요Complete expression
- 조심하다 → 조심하 + 지 않으면 안 되다 → 조심하지 않으면 안 돼요Complete expression
- Any verb stem + -지 않으면 안 되다 → 가지 않으면 안 돼요, 공부하지 않으면 안 돼요.
- In speech, -지 않으면 often becomes 안 -(으)면: 안 가면 안 돼요.
- Past: -지 않으면 안 됐어요 (had to).
- The ending is always 안 되다, not 안 하다.
- It also works with adjectives for a required state: 건강하지 않으면 안 돼요.
- 안 되다 is two words: 안 돼요, not 안돼요.
Think in Korean · an English-speaker’s guide
- English “must / have to” is one word; Korean builds it from “if not → not okay.” Learn it as one chunk.
- -아/어야 해요 is the everyday choice. Use -지 않으면 안 돼요 when you want to stress that there’s no way around it.
- Don’t confuse it with -(으)면 안 돼요 (must not): 가면 안 돼요 = you must not go; 가지 않으면 안 돼요 = you must go.
