Hyeju’s Beginner Korean · Lesson 85 · Grammar

No Other Choice: -(으)ㄹ 수밖에 없어요

Explain why circumstances leave no other choice, and distinguish “cannot,” “need to,” and “have no choice but to.”

Introduction / Review

-(으)ㄹ 수밖에 없어요 says circumstances leave no other practical choice: “have no choice but to ….” It combines the form from -(으)ㄹ 수 with 밖에 and a negative predicate.

N = noun; V = action verb; A = descriptive verb. Romanization is a reading aid.

Today’s Grammar / Explanation

  1. Vowel + ㄹ 수밖에 없어요: 가다 → 갈 수밖에 없어요. Consonant + 을 수밖에 없어요: 먹다 → 먹을 수밖에 없어요.
  2. Final ㄹ stays: 만들 수밖에 없어요. Irregulars: 걷다 → 걸을 수밖에 없어요; 돕다 → 도울 수밖에 없어요.
  3. Keep the spacing: 할 수밖에 없어요. 밖에 attaches to 수, but 수 is separated from the preceding modifier.

Common mistakes

갈 수 없어요 means “cannot go.” 갈 수밖에 없어요 means “have no choice but to go.” The meaning is almost the opposite, so check for 밖에. Give the circumstance that rules out alternatives instead of using this form for an ordinary preference.

걸어갈 수밖에 있어요.걸어갈 수밖에 없어요.

밖에 always needs a negative: 없어요.

조금 더 기다리을 수밖에 없어요.조금 더 기다릴 수밖에 없어요.

기다리 ends in a vowel → ㄹ 수밖에.

걸어갈 수 밖에 없어요.걸어갈 수밖에 없어요.

밖에 attaches to 수 with no space: 수밖에.

택시를 타는 수밖에 없어요.택시를 탈 수밖에 없어요.

It’s always -(으)ㄹ 수밖에.

Need to, cannot, or have no other choice?

Imagine that you have missed the last train. The buses have also stopped, home is too far to walk, and a taxi is the only available way home.

  • 택시를 타야 해요. — I need to take a taxi. This states a need or requirement; the sentence alone does not explain whether alternatives exist.
  • 택시를 탈 수 없어요. — I cannot take a taxi. Perhaps you cannot pay for it. This expresses inability or impossibility.
  • 택시를 탈 수밖에 없어요. — I have no choice but to take a taxi. The circumstances rule out the other practical options.

A practice conversation

A: 버스도 없어요? — Are there no buses either?
B: 네. 집도 너무 멀어요. — No. Home is too far away, too.
A: 그럼 택시를 탈 수밖에 없겠네요. — Then I suppose you have no choice but to take a taxi.

The last line adds -겠네요 to express a conclusion about the situation. At this stage, practise the simpler statement 택시를 탈 수밖에 없어요 first.

It can also describe an inevitable good result

이렇게 매일 연습하면 잘할 수밖에 없어요. — If you practise every day like this, you are bound to do well.

Here the speaker strongly expects a positive result. The expression is not restricted to unhappy choices, and it is not a literal guarantee that practice always produces success.

Check the circumstance, not just the ending

  1. In the last-train situation above, choose 택시를 탈 수 없어요 or 택시를 탈 수밖에 없어요. Why?
  2. The subway is running, you have plenty of time, and you simply prefer taxis. Does “I have no choice” describe that situation?
  3. Write one reason and one result using -(으)ㄹ 수밖에 없어요.
Check your reasoning
  1. 택시를 탈 수밖에 없어요. The taxi is the remaining option. 탈 수 없어요 would say that taking it is impossible.
  2. Not on the information given. Preference alone does not rule out the subway. Use a preference expression, or explain a real constraint that makes the subway unsuitable.
  3. Example: 가게가 문을 닫아서 내일 다시 올 수밖에 없어요. — The shop is closed, so I have no choice but to come back tomorrow. Check that your reason limits alternatives, that the verb form fits, and that you write 수밖에 together.
