How Long It Has Been: -(으)ㄴ 지

Introduction / Review
-(으)ㄴ 지 + duration + 됐어요 measures elapsed time from an event or the start of an activity. It answers “How long has it been since …?”
N = noun; V = action verb; A = descriptive verb. Romanization is a reading aid.
Today’s Grammar / Explanation
- Use the completed-action modifier: 오다 → 온 지; 시작하다 → 시작한 지; 먹다 → 먹은 지.
- Final ㄹ drops: 살다 → 산 지; 만들다 → 만든 지. Irregular: 듣다 → 들은 지.
- Write 온 지 두 달 됐어요. 지 is a dependent noun here and is separated from the preceding modifier. 두 달이 됐어요 is also possible.

Common mistakes
한국어를 공부한 지 2년 됐어요 commonly measures time since beginning Korean study; it does not say the person finished studying two years ago. Adding 시작하다 can make the starting point explicit. Compare 두 시간 동안 공부했어요, which measures the study activity itself.
Always use the past -(으)ㄴ: 배운 지.
Here 지 is a separate word, so put a space: 온 지.
Use 되다: 5년 됐어요.
Don’t mix 동안 into this pattern.
