Learn Trying an Activity: -아/어 보다 with form rules, natural examples, common mistakes, romanization, and six practice questions with answers.
Introduction / Review
-아/어 보다 means to try an action and see what it is like. It is useful for food, clothes, and cultural experiences. The auxiliary 보다 does not mean physically looking in this construction.
N = noun; V = action verb; A = descriptive verb. Romanization is a reading aid.
Today’s Grammar / Explanation
- Use the 아/어 form + 보다: 먹다 → 먹어 보다; 하다 → 해 보다; 입다 → 입어 보다.
- Polite suggestion: 먹어 보세요. Past experience: 먹어 봤어요. Future intention: 먹어 볼 거예요.
- Irregulars follow the vowel-ending pattern: 듣다 → 들어 보다; 쓰다 → 써 보다. Keep the spacing used here: 먹어 보세요.

Compare 먹고 싶어요 (I want to eat) with 먹어 보고 싶어요 (I want to try eating). Both can be natural, but the second adds a trial or experience. 먹어 본 적이 있어요 combines this pattern with the experience grammar from Lesson 55.
보다 follows the -아/어 form: 입어 보세요.
Experience uses the past form: 가 본 적.
For elders, use the respectful verb: 드셔 보세요.
For 보다 (to watch), just say 봤어요. 봐 봤어요 sounds clumsy.
