An Action Interrupted or Changed: -다가

Learn An Action Interrupted or Changed: -다가 with form rules, natural examples, common mistakes, romanization, and six practice questions with answers.

Introduction / Review

-다가 shows an ongoing action that changes, stops, or is interrupted by another event. It is useful for little stories about what happened during your day.

N = noun; V = action verb; A = descriptive verb. Romanization is a reading aid.

Today’s Grammar / Explanation

  1. Attach 다가 to the action stem: 가다 → 가다가; 공부하다 → 공부하다가; 걷다 → 걷다가.
  2. Keep the original stem before ㄷ: 듣다 → 듣다가; 만들다 → 만들다가. Do not use the changed 아/어 stem.
  3. In basic action-change examples, the same person is involved in both events. Put past tense on the final event when telling a past story.

Common mistakes

-다가 does not ordinarily mean “after finishing.” 공부하다가 쉬었어요 suggests stopping study to rest. 공부한 후에 쉬었어요 explicitly presents resting after study. Completed movement followed by a return uses forms such as 갔다가; that is recognition material beyond today’s core pattern.

제가 공부하다가 친구가 왔어요.제가 공부하는데 친구가 왔어요.

With -다가 the subject normally stays the same. For two people, use -는데.
