Turning an Action into a Noun: -는 것

Learn Turning an Action into a Noun: -는 것 with form rules, natural examples, common mistakes, romanization, and six practice questions with answers.

Introduction / Review

Use -는 것 to talk about an action as a thing: reading, cooking, or learning Korean. The resulting phrase can take particles and act as the subject or object of a sentence.

N = noun; V = action verb; A = descriptive verb. Romanization is a reading aid.

Today’s Grammar / Explanation

  1. Action stem + 는 것: 읽다 → 읽는 것; 걷다 → 걷는 것; 배우다 → 배우는 것. Final ㄹ drops: 만들다 → 만드는 것.
  2. Use subject 이 or object 을 after 것: 읽는 것이 좋아요; 읽는 것을 좋아해요.
  3. Common spoken contractions: 것이 → 게; 것을 → 걸; 것은 → 건. These shorten the noun phrase, not the action stem.
