Introduction / Review

N = noun; V = action verb; A = descriptive verb. Romanization is a reading aid.
Today’s Grammar / Explanation
- Vowel + ㄹ 수: 가다 → 갈 수 있어요. Consonant + 을 수: 읽다 → 읽을 수 있어요. Final ㄹ stays: 만들 수 있어요.

Dialogue: Making Weekend Plans
Yuna and Minsu plan a weekend picnic. Notice when -(으)ㄹ 수 있어요/없어요 is about a schedule and when it is about a skill.
Point: 만날 수 없어요 is about the schedule, while 탈 수 있어요 and 만들 수 있어요 are about skills. 못 해요 is a short, everyday way to say “can’t.”
-(으)ㄹ 수 있다 vs -(으)ㄹ 줄 알다 vs 못
English uses “can” for all three, but Korean separates them.
| Pattern | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| -(으)ㄹ 수 있다/없다 | Ability, or whether the situation allows it | 내일은 갈 수 없어요. |
| -(으)ㄹ 줄 알다/모르다 | Knowing how to do a learned skill (Lesson 39) | 운전할 줄 알아요. |
| 못 + verb | A short “can’t” for everyday conversation | 오늘은 못 가요. |
Common mistakes
수영할 수 있어요 describes ability. 내일 만날 수 있어요 can mean your schedule allows a meeting. 못 해요 often overlaps with inability or circumstances; 안 해요 does not by itself mean “cannot.”
먹 ends in a consonant → 을 수 있어요.
The negative is 없어요, not 안 있어요.
Stems ending in ㄹ add 수 있어요 directly: 만들 수 있어요.
수 is a separate word, so put spaces: 갈 수 있어요.

Questions Learners Often Ask
수영할 수 있어요 or 수영할 줄 알아요?
Both can mean “I can swim.” 줄 알다 focuses on knowing how. -(으)ㄹ 수 있다 also covers the situation, so for “Can you swim today?” say 오늘 수영할 수 있어요?, not 줄 알아요.
Can I use it with adjectives?
Yes, but then it means possibility: 내일은 추울 수 있어요 means “It might be cold tomorrow.”
How do I ask “Can I …?” for permission?
For permission, use -아/어도 돼요? from Lesson 36: 여기 앉아도 돼요? (“May I sit here?”). 앉을 수 있어요? sounds like you are asking whether sitting is physically possible.
Today’s Key Point
