Lesson 13 · Time + 에 & N마다
Hyeju’s Beginner Korean Grammar Class · Lesson 13
Time + 에 & N마다
Say when something happens and how often it repeats.
From Where to When
Lesson 12 used 에 for destinations and locations. Today, use 에 to answer “when?” and 마다 to describe repeated routines. N means a noun; no special form is needed after a vowel or consonant.
Today’s Grammar
N마다 + activity
에 locates an activity at a time. 마다 means “every” or “each.” Attach the particle directly: 월요일에, 주말마다. Do not add an extra space between the noun and its particle.
Part 1 · A Specific Time + 에
A full time phrase takes 에 at its end: 오후 두 시에. You do not need 에 after every word inside that phrase. For clock times, keep the number system from Lesson 10: native Korean hours and Sino-Korean minutes.
Part 2 · Common Words Without 에
Start With These Natural Sentences
In ordinary beginner sentences, use 오늘, 내일, 어제 (yesterday), 지금 (now), 언제 (when), and 매일 without 에. This is a practical pattern, not a claim that every possible construction with these words follows the same rule.
Part 3 · Repetition With 마다
Use 마다 after a repeated unit: day, morning, weekend, or Monday. In this basic pattern, use 주말마다, not 주말에마다. 매일 already means every day, so practice 매일 공부해요 rather than adding 마다 to it.
Compare the Focus
| Expression | Focus |
|---|---|
| 주말에 운동해요. | The activity happens on the weekend; repetition is not explicitly marked. |
| 주말마다 운동해요. | The activity repeats every weekend. |
A sentence with 에 can still describe a habitual schedule in context. 마다 makes the repetition explicit.

LESSON 12
Place + 에

어릴 때 부산에 살았어요.For “when (something happens)”, use -(으)ㄹ 때 with a verb, not 에.
Look ahead: Lesson 53 →| Pattern | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 에 | A specific time | 세 시에, 토요일에 |
| (no 에) | 오늘, 내일, 어제, 지금, 매일 | 오늘 만나요 |
| 마다 | every … | 날마다, 주말마다 |
| 동안 | during a period | 방학 동안 |
Common mistakes
오늘에 공부해요. → 오늘 공부해요.
주말에마다 운동해요. → 주말마다 운동해요.
오후에 두 시에 만나요. → For one clock-time phrase, use 오후 두 시에 만나요.
오늘, 내일, 어제 and 지금 don’t take 에.
매일 already means “every day”, so don’t add 마다. (날마다 is also fine.)
A specific clock time needs 에.
Don’t add 에 after 마다.
