Lesson 10 · Korean Numbers & Counters

Hyeju’s Beginner Korean Grammar Class · Lesson 10

Korean Numbers & Counters

Learn the two Korean number systems, choose the right one by situation, and use numbers naturally for counting, time, dates, prices, and age.

Beginner · Level 1 Native vs. Sino-Korean Counters · Time · Dates · Prices

Start with a Real-Life Goal

사과 세 개 주세요. Three apples, please.
지금 두 시 십 분이에요. It is 2:10 now.

Korean has two number systems. You may already know 하나, 둘, 셋… and 일, 이, 삼….

The difficult part is not learning that both exist. The real question is:

Hyeju’s Number Shortcut Look at the unit first.

The word after the number usually tells you which number system to use.

Part 1 · Choose a Number System

Instead of asking “Is 3 셋 or 삼?”, first ask: “What comes after the number?”

COUNT TEAM

Native Korean

Native Korean numbers are commonly used when you count everyday people and things, tell the clock hour, or talk about age with 살.

개 · 명 · 권 · 잔 · 시 · 살

사과 세 개
학생 두 명
책 네 권
두 시
스무 살

INFO TEAM

Sino-Korean

Sino-Korean numbers are commonly used for numerical information such as minutes, dates, money, and phone numbers.

분 · 초 · 월 · 일 · 원

삼 분
삼십 초
구월 이십팔 일
삼천 원
공일공…

🌿 Hyeju’s Shortcut · COUNT or INFO?

Think of the two systems as two teams.

Native Korean = COUNT Team
People · things · clock hours · age

Sino-Korean = INFO Team
Minutes · seconds · dates · money · phone numbers

This is a beginner-friendly shortcut, not a rule for every counter in Korean. Some counters and formal expressions use different patterns, so it is helpful to learn the number together with its unit.

Part 2 · One Number, Two Names

Do not memorize the two systems as completely separate lists. Pair the two names for the same number.

Number Native Korean Romanization Sino-Korean Romanization
1 하나 hana 일 il
2 둘 dul 이 i
3 셋 set 삼 sam
4 넷 net 사 sa
5 다섯 daseot 오 o
6 여섯 yeoseot 육 yuk
7 일곱 ilgop 칠 chil
8 여덟 yeodeol 팔 pal
9 아홉 ahop 구 gu
10 열 yeol 십 sip

🎭 One Number, Two Outfits

Imagine that every number has two outfits. The situation decides which outfit it wears.

🍎 3 apples 사과 세 개

개 → COUNT Team → Native Korean

🕒 3 o’clock 세 시

시 → COUNT Team → Native Korean

⏱️ 3 minutes 삼 분

분 → INFO Team → Sino-Korean

💰 3,000 won 삼천 원

원 → INFO Team → Sino-Korean

📅 March 3 삼월 삼일

월 / 일 → INFO Team → Sino-Korean

The number is still 3. Only its Korean form changes depending on the situation.

🎮 3-Second Switch Game

When you see a number, ask:

  1. What is the unit?
  2. COUNT Team or INFO Team?
2 + 시 시 → COUNT Team → Native Korean
✅ 두 시
2 + 분 분 → INFO Team → Sino-Korean
✅ 이 분
4 + 개 개 → COUNT Team
✅ 네 개
4 + 월 월 → INFO Team
✅ 사월

Part 3 · Build Bigger Numbers

NATIVE KOREAN

Tens Have Their Own Words

10 = 열
20 = 스물
30 = 서른
40 = 마흔
50 = 쉰

스물 + 하나 → 스물하나

21 = 스물하나
32 = 서른둘

SINO-KOREAN

Build Around 십

10 = 십
20 = 이십
30 = 삼십
40 = 사십

이 + 십 + 삼 → 이십삼

23 = 이십삼
45 = 사십오

🌿 Hyeju’s Note · 10 and 11

Say:

✅ 십
✅ 십일

Not:

❌ 일십
❌ 일십일

🌿 Hyeju’s Note · Larger Numbers for Prices

백 = 100
천 = 1,000
만 = 10,000

2,000 = 이천
5,000 = 오천
12,000 = 만 이천

Part 4 · Change the Number Before a Counter

Some Native Korean numbers change form before a counter.

Counting Alone Before a Counter Example
하나 한 한 개
둘 두 두 명
셋 세 세 권
넷 네 네 잔
스물 스무 스무 살

Watch the Form

❌ 하나 개 → ✅ 한 개
❌ 둘 명 → ✅ 두 명
❌ 셋 권 → ✅ 세 권
❌ 넷 잔 → ✅ 네 잔

What About 21, 22, 23, and 24?

Number Counting Form Before a Counter
21스물하나스물한
22스물둘스물두
23스물셋스물세
24스물넷스물네

스물한 살 = twenty-one years old
스물두 살 = twenty-two years old

But exactly 20 is 스무 살.

❌ 스무한 살
✅ 스물한 살

Part 5 · Noun + Number + Counter

Today’s Pattern Noun + Native Korean Number + Counter
사과 세 개 three apples
학생 두 명 two students
책 네 권 four books
커피 한 잔 one cup of coffee
Sentence Pattern Example
N이/가 + number + counter + 있어요 책이 세 권 있어요. — There are three books.
N + number + counter + 주세요 커피 두 잔 주세요. — Two cups of coffee, please.

Write spaces between the noun, number, and counter: 사과 세 개.

✅ 사과 세 개
❌ 사과세개

Part 6 · Tell the Time

Korean clock time is a perfect example because both number systems appear in the same expression.

Today’s Pattern Native Korean + 시 / Sino-Korean + 분
Time Korean
1:00한 시
2:10두 시 십 분
3:30세 시 삼십 분 / 세 시 반
4:05네 시 오 분
11:20열한 시 이십 분
12:00열두 시

반 means “half” here. 세 시 반 = half past three.

오전 = a.m.
오후 = p.m.

오전 아홉 시 = 9 a.m.
오후 세 시 = 3 p.m.

🌿 Hyeju’s Note · Clock Time vs. Duration

두 시 = two o’clock

두 시간 = two hours

시 tells you what time it is.
시간 tells you how long something lasts.

Part 7 · Dates, Prices & Age

Meaning Korean Number System
September 28 구월 이십팔 일 Sino-Korean
June 유월 Sino-Korean · special reading
October 시월 Sino-Korean · special reading
2,500 won 이천오백 원 Sino-Korean
20 years old 스무 살 Native Korean
21 years old 스물한 살 Native Korean

Dates

Korean date order is: year → month → day.

9월 28일
→ 구월 이십팔 일

Special Month Readings

6월 → ✅ 유월 · ❌ 육월

10월 → ✅ 시월 · ❌ 십월

Prices

1,000 won → 천 원
2,500 won → 이천오백 원
3,000 won → 삼천 원
10,000 won → 만 원

Age

Age with 살 usually uses Native Korean numbers.

20 years old → 스무 살
21 years old → 스물한 살
25 years old → 스물다섯 살

오늘은 구월 이십팔 일이에요. Today is September 28.
이 공책은 이천오백 원이에요. This notebook is 2,500 won.
저는 스물한 살이에요. I am twenty-one years old.

스무한 살 → 스물한 살
Only exact 20 becomes 스무.

저는 이십 살이에요.저는 스무 살이에요.

Age with 살 uses native numbers, and 스물 becomes 스무 before 살.

제 생일은 육월이에요.제 생일은 유월이에요.

Today’s Key Point

Look at the unit first. The unit usually tells you which number system to use.

Native Korean = COUNT Team: common counters, clock hours, and age with 살.

Sino-Korean = INFO Team: minutes, seconds, dates, money, and phone numbers.

하나 · 둘 · 셋 · 넷 → 한 · 두 · 세 · 네 before counters.

스물 → 스무, but 스물하나 → 스물한.

One number can have two Korean names. The situation chooses the form.
