HYEJU LANGUAGE LAB · INTERMEDIATE 26 · LESSON 111
-았/었으면 좋겠다I wish… / I hope… / It would be nice if…
-았/었으면 좋겠다 expresses a hope or wish: 주말에 날씨가 좋았으면 좋겠어요 (I hope the weather is nice this weekend). Even with 았/었, it talks about the present or future. When the wish depends on someone else or on luck, it is more natural than -고 싶다.

A situation you already know
Your friend has a job interview tomorrow.
I hope your interview goes well tomorrow. Good luck!
The interview is tomorrow, yet the form is 봤으면. In wishes, 았/었 means “it would be nice if things turned out that way.”
Build the form
- 오다 → 왔 + 으면 좋겠다 → 왔으면 좋겠다Complete expression
- 좋다 → 좋았 + 으면 좋겠다 → 좋았으면 좋겠다Complete expression
- 합격하다 → 합격했 + 으면 좋겠다 → 합격했으면 좋겠다Complete expression
- 그치다 → 그쳤 + 으면 좋겠다 → 그쳤으면 좋겠다Complete expression
- Stem + -았/었으면 좋겠다: 왔으면, 좋았으면, 합격했으면, 먹었으면.
- Negative wish: 안 -았/었으면 / -지 않았으면 좋겠어요 → 비가 안 왔으면 좋겠어요.
- Nouns: 였/이었으면 좋겠다 → 주말이었으면, 부자였으면 좋겠어요.
- -(으)면 좋겠다 (without 았/었) is also used and sounds a little lighter: 비가 그치면 좋겠어요.
- Polite wish for someone: 건강하셨으면 좋겠어요.
- Put a space before 좋겠다: 왔으면 좋겠어요.
Think in Korean · an English-speaker’s guide
- English shifts tense for unreal wishes (“I wish I were taller”) but not for hopes (“I hope it’s sunny”). Korean uses one form for both: 내일 맑았으면 좋겠어요 / 키가 컸으면 좋겠어요.
- For things you can do yourself, -고 싶어요 is common (가고 싶어요). For wishes that depend on others or on luck, -았/었으면 좋겠어요 sounds natural.
- It also works as a gentle request: 내일까지 보내 주셨으면 좋겠어요 (I’d appreciate it if you could send it by tomorrow).
Six examples in context
I hope the weather is nice this weekend.
I hope my younger sibling passes the exam.
I hope it doesn’t rain tomorrow.
I wish every day were the weekend.
I hope my parents always stay healthy.
I’d appreciate it if you could send the materials by tomorrow.
