HYEJU LANGUAGE LAB · INTERMEDIATE 52 · LESSON 137
-았/었더라면if (only) I had… (but I didn’t)
-았/었더라면 imagines the opposite of what really happened in the past: 조금만 일찍 출발했더라면 기차를 탔을 거예요 (If I had left a little earlier, I would have caught the train). It often carries regret, or sometimes relief.

A situation you already know
You missed a concert because tickets sold out in minutes.
If I’d booked right away yesterday, I could have gone.
In reality you didn’t book, so you couldn’t go. -았/었더라면 + -았/었을 텐데요 expresses that regret.

- The second clause is usually an imagined past result: -
- Often begins with 만약(에) or 조금만.
Think in Korean · an English-speaker’s guide
- This is English “If I had…, I would have…” (third conditional). Same logic: the opposite of reality.
- The second part loves -았/었을 텐데요 (“it would have been… but”), from Lesson 110.
- -았/었다면 (Lesson 133) can mean the same; -더라면 sounds more emotional and regretful.
