Introduction / Review
-게 되다 presents a change or how circumstances lead to an outcome: you come to work in Korea or get to know someone. It shifts attention toward the process or situation that brings about the change.
N = noun; V = action verb; A = descriptive verb. Romanization is a reading aid.
Today’s Grammar / Explanation
- Action stem + 게 되다: 일하다 → 일하게 되다; 알다 → 알게 되다; 가다 → 가게 되다.
- Past conversational form: 일하게 됐어요. Future: 일하게 될 거예요. 되다 → 돼요; 되었다 → 됐어요.
- Keep the original stem before 게: 듣다 → 듣게 되다; 만들다 → 만들게 되다.

날씨가 많이 추워졌어요.-아/어지다 is a change in an adjective’s state. -게 되다 is a change in circumstances or actions, often not by your choice.

Common mistakes
Compare 공부하기로 했어요 (I decided to study) with 공부하게 됐어요 (circumstances led me to study / I came to study). -게 되다 can include choices people made; it does not always mean “against my will.” For a simple adjective change, -아/어지다 is common, but is not today’s target.
For an adjective changing, use -아/어지다.
되 + 었어요 → 됐어요 (or 되었어요). 돼었어요 is not a word.
If it was your own decision, -기로 했어요 sounds more natural.
The pattern is -(으)ㄹ 수 있게 되다.
