Doing Two Things at Once: -(으)면서
Learn Doing Two Things at Once: -(으)면서 with form rules, natural examples, common mistakes, romanization, and six practice questions with answers.
Introduction / Review
Use -(으)면서 when one person performs two actions at the same time. One action often provides the background while the other is the main activity.
N = noun; V = action verb; A = descriptive verb. Romanization is a reading aid.
Today’s Grammar / Explanation
- Vowel or final ㄹ + 면서: 가다 → 가면서; 만들다 → 만들면서. Other consonants + 으면서: 먹다 → 먹으면서.
- Irregulars: 듣다 → 들으면서; 걷다 → 걸으면서. The ㄹ of these changed forms remains.
- In the simultaneous-action use taught here, both clauses normally share a subject. Put tense on the final predicate: 들으면서 공부했어요.
