Introduction / Review
-는 동안 describes a period while an activity continues. Another action or state occupies some or all of that period. Unlike -(으)면서, the two clauses can naturally have different subjects.
N = noun; V = action verb; A = descriptive verb. Romanization is a reading aid.

- Action stem + 는 동안: 공부하다 → 공부하는 동안; 기다리다 → 기다리는 동안. Final ㄹ drops: 살다 → 사는 동안.
- Noun + 동안: 방학 동안, 수업 동안. A length of time can also precede 동안: 한 시간 동안.
- Use an activity that provides a time span. 기다리는 동안 fits naturally because waiting continues for a period.

Common mistakes
The main action need not continue for every second of the first action. 엄마가 요리하는 동안 저는 숙제를 했어요 describes overlapping time with different subjects. Do not translate 동안 mechanically as “after”; that is 후에.
It’s always -는 동안, even when the story is in the past.
Don’t put 에서 after 동안. (동안에 is fine.)
ㄹ-stems drop the ㄹ before -는: 사는 동안.
Noun + 동안, with no 의.
