When You Do Something: -(으)ㄹ 때
Learn When You Do Something: -(으)ㄹ 때 with form rules, natural examples, common mistakes, romanization, and six practice questions with answers.
Introduction / Review
Use -(으)ㄹ 때 to describe the time or situation when something happens. It does not automatically mean future time. It can describe a repeated situation: “when I study.”
N = noun; V = action verb; A = descriptive verb. Romanization is a reading aid.
Today’s Grammar / Explanation
- Vowel + ㄹ 때: 가다 → 갈 때; 바쁘다 → 바쁠 때. Consonant + 을 때: 먹다 → 먹을 때. Final ㄹ stays: 살 때.
- Irregulars: 춥다 → 추울 때; 듣다 → 들을 때. Nouns use 일 때: 학생일 때.
- For an explicitly past or completed situation, use -았/었을 때: 한국에 갔을 때. Do not mechanically substitute -(으)ㄴ 때 for every past “when.”

Common mistakes
Both 어릴 때 and 어렸을 때 can refer to childhood in context. The latter makes past realization more explicit. Focus on the time relationship, not an English future translation of ㄹ. Write a space before 때.
이다 attaches to the noun: 학생일 때.
You had already arrived when it felt cold, so use -았/었을 때.
Time nouns take 때 directly: 점심 때.
It’s always -(으)ㄹ 때, never -는 때.
