Describing Nouns: A-(으)ㄴ N

Learn Describing Nouns: A-(으)ㄴ N with form rules, natural examples, common mistakes, romanization, and six practice questions with answers.

Introduction / Review

Put a descriptive word before a noun: “a small bag,” “a pretty flower.” Korean adjectives need a modifier ending before the noun; their polite sentence forms cannot be placed there directly.

N = noun; V = action verb; A = descriptive verb. Romanization is a reading aid.

Today’s Grammar / Explanation

  1. Vowel + ㄴ: 크다 → 큰 가방; 예쁘다 → 예쁜 꽃. Consonant + 은: 작다 → 작은 가방; 좋다 → 좋은 책.
  2. Final ㄹ drops: 길다 → 긴 머리; 멀다 → 먼 학교. Common irregulars: 춥다 → 추운 날; 하얗다 → 하얀 옷.
  3. 있다/없다 and related adjectives use 는: 재미있는 책, 맛있는 음식, 시간 없는 사람. This is an important exception to the basic adjective pattern.
