Plan a Simple Journey

Name the vehicle, name the destination, and point to a direction. Lesson 12 supplies the destination pattern 장소에 가요. Today adds the way you travel. Some vehicle names may be familiar; this lesson organizes them for directions.

버스

beoseu · bus

Ends in a vowel: 버스 + 로.

버스로 학교에 가요.beoseuro hakgyo-e gayoI go to school by bus.

지하철

jihacheol · subway

Final ㄹ takes 로: 지하철로.

지하철로 회사에 가요.jihacheollo hoesa-e gayoI go to work by subway.

택시

taeksi · taxi

타요 = ride or take a vehicle.

택시를 타요.taegsireul tayoI take a taxi.

기차

gicha · train

부산 is a Korean city.

기차로 부산에 가요.gicharo busan-e gayoI go to Busan by train.

비행기

bihaenggi · airplane

와요 = come; the viewpoint matters.

비행기로 한국에 와요.bihaenggiro hangug-e wayoI come to Korea by plane.

자전거

jajeongeo · bicycle

Use 타요 for riding.

자전거를 타요.jajeongeoreul tayoI ride a bicycle.

자동차

jadongcha · car

차 is a common shorter word in context.

자동차로 학교에 가요.jadongcharo hakgyo-e gayoI go to school by car.

왼쪽

oenjjok · left; left side

Points toward a direction.

왼쪽으로 가요.oenjjogeuro gayoI go to the left.

오른쪽

oreunjjok · right; right side

Contrast with 왼쪽.

오른쪽으로 가요.oreunjjogeuro gayoI go to the right.

앞

ap · front; ahead

Location: 학교 앞 + 에.

학교 앞에 있어요.hakgyo ap-e isseoyoI am in front of the school.

뒤

dwi · back; behind

Location: 학교 뒤 + 에.

학교 뒤에 있어요.hakgyo dwi-e isseoyoI am behind the school.

길

gil · road; path; way

Final ㄹ + 로 → 길로.

이 길로 가요.i gillo gayoI go this way.

Useful Phrases

어떻게 학교에 가요?eotteoke hakgyo-e gayoHow do you get to school?

버스로 가요.beoseuro gayoI go by bus.

걸어서 가요.georeoseo gayoI go on foot.

어떻게 asks “how?” 걸어서 is a useful set phrase meaning “on foot”; it is not an example of noun + 로. You can learn it as a phrase before studying its verb ending.

Make Your Own Route

Vehicle + (으)로 + destination + 에 가요.

Choose a real route: 버스로 학교에 가요. 지하철로 회사에 가요. Next, imagine a map and point: 왼쪽으로 가요. Keep the destination and the travel method separate.

Hyeju’s Note

앞에 and 뒤에 locate something. 왼쪽으로 and 오른쪽으로 describe a direction of travel. Compare place and direction before changing the particle.
