Lesson 39 · V-(으)ㄹ 줄 알다 / 모르다
HYEJU LANGUAGE LAB · BEGINNER · 39
Use V-(으)ㄹ 줄 알다 / 모르다 in the context of sports, music and cooking skills. Work through the form, the meaning and the examples before trying the six practice questions.
How the pattern works
-(으)ㄹ 줄 알아요
This pattern describes knowing how to perform an action. Use 모르다 for not knowing how: 수영할 줄 몰라요.
ㄹ / 을
After a vowel, add ㄹ: 타다 → 탈 줄. After a consonant other than ㄹ, add 을: 읽다 → 읽을 줄. Final ㄹ stays: 만들다 → 만들 줄.
Spacing
Write a space before and after 줄: 할 줄 알아요. Polite forms: 알다 → 알아요; 모르다 → 몰라요.
Skill
수영할 줄 알아요 focuses on swimming knowledge or skill. 수영할 수 있어요 is broader and can describe ability or circumstances. Knowing how does not always mean being able to do it right now.
