Lesson 22 · Introductions & Finding Things

HYEJU LANGUAGE LAB · BEGINNER · 22

A name, a notebook, a missing key: small things give you many chances to use Korean. Learn words for introducing yourself and identifying the person or object you mean.

By the end, you can introduce yourself, name everyday belongings, and ask who owns something.

01 · 학생

haksaeng

Use 학생이에요 after the consonant ending.

04 · 누구

Nuga wasseoyo? Minsuga wasseoyo.

Who came? Minsu came.

05 · 가방

가방은 sets a bag as the topic; 가방이 identifies the subject.

Eoneu gabang-i je gabang-ieyo?

Which bag is my bag?

06 · 공책

gongchaek

Use 공책이 after the final consonant.

This notebook is mine. That notebook is Minsu's.

07 · 연필

je

my (polite)

제 is the shortened form of 저의. Do not add another 의.

이것이 제 휴대폰이에요.

Igeos-i je hyudaepon-ieyo.

This is my phone.

A familiar word can take either 은/는 or 이/가. The choice depends on the message: 가방은 introduces or contrasts a bag, while 가방이 can identify which object is relevant.

Practice

  1. Choose the word for student: 학생 / 주인.
  2. Complete ‘my notebook’: ___ 공책. Use the polite form of ‘my’.
  3. Complete ‘Who came?’: ___ 왔어요?
  4. Translate: ‘The key is missing.’ Use 열쇠 and 없어요.
  5. Choose the verb for looking for a pencil: 찾다 / 마시다.
  6. Translate: ‘Who is the owner of this bag?’
Check your answers
  1. 학생 means student. 주인 means owner.
  2. 제 공책. 제 is short for 저의.
  3. 누가 왔어요? 누구 + 가 contracts to 누가.
  4. 열쇠가 없어요.
  5. 찾다. 연필을 찾아요 means ‘I am looking for a pencil.’
  6. 이 가방의 주인이 누구예요?

Your turn

Choose three real objects near you. Name them, say which one is yours with 제, and ask a partner who owns another one. Example: 이 공책은 제 공책이에요.

Key point

Learn 제 공책, 열쇠를 찾아요, and 주인이 누구예요? as useful chunks. They help you talk about real belongings immediately.

Romanization is a reading aid. Read the Hangul as often as you can; English spelling cannot reproduce every Korean sound.
