Learn Have You Ever…?: -(으)ㄴ 적이 있어요/없어요 with form rules, natural examples, common mistakes, romanization, and six practice questions with answers.
Introduction / Review
Talk about whether an experience has occurred at least once. -(으)ㄴ 적이 있어요 means “have done before”; 없어요 means you have no such experience. This is useful for travel, food, and cultural activities.
N = noun; V = action verb; A = descriptive verb. Romanization is a reading aid.
Today’s Grammar / Explanation
- Use the completed-action modifier: 가다 → 간 적이 있어요; 먹다 → 먹은 적이 있어요; 하다 → 한 적이 있어요.
- Final ㄹ drops: 만들다 → 만든 적이 있어요. Irregulars: 듣다 → 들은 적이 있어요.
- Write 간 적이 있어요. 적 is a dependent noun; 이 attaches to 적, and 있어요 stays separate.

Common mistakes
어제 김치를 먹었어요 reports a particular past event. 김치를 먹은 적이 있어요 answers an experience question. For a specific occasion, the simple past is usually the clearer starting point. Both patterns can include context, so this is a teaching contrast, not an absolute ban on dates.
Experience uses the past form -(으)ㄴ: 간 적.
For a specific time like 어제, just use the past. 적이 있어요 is general life experience.
ㄹ-stems drop the ㄹ: 만든 적.
The negative is 없어요, not 안 있어요.
