Name places you visit, then connect each place to a simple action. 교실 is review from Lesson 02. Other place names extend today’s neighborhood theme. Romanization is a reading aid; prioritize Hangul.

Recall this familiar place; use 에 with 가요.

학교에 가요.hakgyo-e gayoI go to school.

도서관

doseogwan · library

Use 에서 for an activity.

도서관에서 공부해요.doseogwan-eseo gongbuhaeyoI study at the library.

식당

sikdang · restaurant; dining hall

밥 can mean a meal, as well as cooked rice.

식당에서 밥을 먹어요.sikdang-eseo babeul meogeoyoI eat a meal at a restaurant.

카페

kape · café

A common meeting place.

카페에서 커피를 마셔요.kape-eseo keopireul masyeoyoI drink coffee at a café.

은행

eunhaeng · bank

Today, 은행 means a bank; the same spelling also means ginkgo.

은행에 가요.eunhaeng-e gayoI go to the bank.

병원

byeongwon · hospital; clinic

Used for hospitals and many medical clinics.

병원에 가요.byeongwon-e gayoI go to the hospital.

약국

yakguk · pharmacy

약 = medicine; 사요 = buy.

약국에서 약을 사요.yakgug-eseo yageul sayoI buy medicine at a pharmacy.

우체국

ucheguk · post office

A place for mail and postal services.

공원

gongwon · park

운동해요 = exercise.

공원에서 운동해요.gongwon-eseo undonghaeyoI exercise at a park.

회사

hoesa · company; workplace

회사 names the organization or, in context, the workplace.

회사에서 일해요.hoesa-eseo ilhaeyoI work at my workplace.

편의점

pyeonuijeom · convenience store

Connect with 물 from Lesson 11.

편의점에서 물을 사요.pyeonuijeom-eseo mureul sayoI buy water at a convenience store.

Useful Phrases

어디에 가요?eodi-e gayoWhere are you going?

어디에서 공부해요?eodieseo gongbuhaeyoWhere do you study?

에 가요 gives a destination. 에서 공부해요 / 먹어요 / 일해요 gives the place of an activity. Attach 에 and 에서 directly to the noun, without a space.

Make Your Own Sentences

Place + 에 가요.
Place + 에서 + action.

Picture two places on your daily route. Say where you go, then say what you do there. Start with 학교에 가요. 도서관에서 공부해요. You can change only the place or only the action.

Hyeju’s Note

Do not choose the particle from the English word “at.” Look at the Korean verb and the meaning. Lesson 12 Grammar explains this choice.
